Frigg Magazine

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

This is Ellen Parker, editor of Frigg. Starting today (June 6, 2026) I'm closing submissions for a few weeks. I have decided to do a "special issue" of Frigg that will go online in late fall/early winter 2026. The name of the special is: Frigg: The Insanity Issue

We'll accept works that are in some way relevant to this theme, which I realize is wide-ranging. Of course, the word (or concept) of "insanity" has many connotations. Deeply personal, or perhaps outside of yourself: household, neighborhood,  local community, an entire nation (I do believe that a country can be catagorized as being insane), or international. Galactic. Multi-galactic. Can include the realm of the living (including outer space), and whatever places the dead occupy. Or maybe you'll tell us about your batshit crazy pet: dog, cat, cockatoo. The crow that visits your yard. Don't forget about plants, foliage, trees, flowers (I have a friend who is terrified of sunflowers, which I get). Anything in nature. Inanimate objects. Parts of your body. Friends and family, and people you've made up. This subject is perhaps all-encompassing.

I'm not asking writers to submit multiple works, as we usually do. I mean, you can submit a bunch of stuff  if you want to, but I'm kinda feeling like: fuck dat. You can submit one poem, one flash, one story, one work of creative nonfiction. Word count for anything is 500 to 3,000. For poetry, less than 500 words is acceptable, but do not submit one haiku or one poem that's only five short lines ... unless it's genius beyond our wildest expectations. Conversely, with longer stuff, 3,000 words is arguably too much. But if you have something that's approximately 3,000 words and it's a fucking masterpiece, sure, send it along.

I'm not going to create individual artwork for every single damn piece in the issue. Doing that has about killed me. But I might create a bunch of artworks (and/or ask other digital artists to contribute, even though I don't know any), from which I will extricate portions. I'm not sure yet. But, really, it will go OK. It might even be fun! Different. Crazy.

As for the submissions still in the queue right here, right now, I and the staff will go through them quickly. A couple of weeks? Some of them might be insane. Bull's eye! However, if you know for sure that what you've submitted doesn't fit the insanity theme, feel free to withdraw it, and send something demented.

Now for the usual bidness:

We accept simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if all or part of the submission has been accepted elsewhere. If your submission contains three or more shorter works (fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction), and one or more of them get(s) accepted elsewhere, please let us know.

We do not accept work that appears (or is forthcoming) in another online venue. However, we do accept work that appears only in print, or has appeared in an online venue that is defunct and no longer maintains an online presence (including archived material). We usually accept stuff that has appeared only in personal blogs.

If your submission is declined and we do not ask to see more work from you, please wait at least a month before submitting more material.

After I reopen submissions, we are now tryyyying to take only a few weeks (or less) to respond. If you think we're taking too long, feel free to contact us at any time to ask us what the hell is the holdup.

(I haven't proofread this yet, but I will. Really, I will.)
